NM Pistachios Are Safe To Eat
The Associated Press

April 2, 2009

Folks won't have to give up their pistachio snack addiction if they're munching on nuts grown and processed in New Mexico.

Pistachio growers, processors and experts in the state say their pistachio nuts are safe to eat and are not linked to a recall of pistachios from a California processor after salmonella contamination was recently discovered.

Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella Inc. in California stopped all distribution of processed pistachios and is voluntarily recalling more than 2 million pounds of its roasted nuts.

"It's important that consumers be aware that it's a problem with a particular company.  The New Mexico pistachio is not involved," said Richard Heerema, pistachio and pecan specialist with New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service.
